Elite Dangerous Engineering Guide: Boost Your Modules
14/07/2026
Engineering is the great multiplier of Elite Dangerous: a modified FSD jumps 50% further, upgraded thrusters transform handling, engineered shields double your survivability. Here's how to get into it without getting lost.
The principle
Characters called engineers, scattered across the bubble, modify your modules in exchange for materials (gathered by scanning, mining, fighting). Each engineer has a speciality and unlock conditions. Modifications climb in grade (1 to 5) and can receive an experimental effect as a bonus.
The absolute priorities
Start with Felicity Farseer (easy to unlock) for the grade 5 "Increased Range" FSD: it's THE modification that changes everything, for every playstyle. Follow with "Dirty Drives" thrusters (handling), then the power plant and shields depending on your activity. A tip: note your missing materials and gather them while playing normally rather than farming.
Managing your materials
Material Traders swap your surplus materials for the ones you're missing — an essential lever to avoid hours of gathering. Always aim for high-grade materials (G4/G5) when the opportunity arises: they convert downward without excessive loss.
A cockpit worthy of your ship
An engineered ship deserves controls to match. Our X55/X56 plates with Elite Dangerous markings and our Warthog plates display your commands right on your HOTAS — because an elite pilot never hunts for buttons. Happy grinding, commander o7
