STAR CITIZEN PANELS

Elite Dangerous Exploration Guide: Heading into the Black

13/07/2026

With 400 billion star systems of which only a tiny fraction has been visited, exploration is the soul of Elite Dangerous. Putting your name on a planet for eternity: that's the promise. Here's how to head into the black.

Preparing your ship

Three qualities matter: jump range, the ability to scoop fuel (fuel scoop — vital!) and lightness. The Diamondback Explorer remains the perfect entry point (~2M cr), the Mandalay has become the modern reference, and the Asp Explorer keeps its faithful for its panoramic canopy. Bring an AFMU (module repair) and an SRV for surfaces.

FSS and DSS: the discoverer's tools

In each system, the FSS (Full Spectrum Scanner) reveals every celestial body from your cockpit: tune the frequency, scan, cash in. The DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner) then maps interesting planets — water worlds, terraformables and life-bearing bodies pay the most, especially as first discoveries.

Survival rules in the black

Far from the bubble, no stations: your ship is your only home. Scoop at every compatible star (K, G, B, F, O, A, M classes), never fly below 20% fuel, and beware of neutron stars. Sell your data occasionally if you pass a Fleet Carrier — data dies with you.

The explorer's cockpit

Exploration means hundreds of jumps and scans: every saved input counts. Our X55/X56 plates with Elite Dangerous markings keep your controls readable through the long crossings, and backlighting is the ally of nights spent between nebulae. Safe travels, commander o7
