Returning to Elite Dangerous in 2026: What's Changed
14/07/2026
You hung up the headset a few years ago and the call of the black is returning? Good news: Elite Dangerous has evolved a lot, and 2026 is a great time to come back. Here's what awaits you.
Odyssey and exobiology
The Odyssey expansion takes you out of the cockpit: on-foot exploration, FPS combat and above all exobiology, now the game's most profitable activity — scanning life forms earns fortunes (our complete guide brings you up to speed). If you left before Odyssey, it's the biggest novelty to discover.
New ships and new mechanics
The fleet has grown: the Mandalay has become the explorers' darling, the Python Mk II beefs up combat, and other hulls followed. SCO drives (Supercruise Overcharge) drastically speed up supercruise journeys — a life-changing comfort. Colonisation now lets players expand the bubble by building their own systems.
Where to pick up again?
Log back in, check your ships and credits, then ease back in: a few missions to regain the reflexes, a look at our making credits in 2026 guide for the new methods, and our which ship to buy path if your hangar has gathered dust.
And your controls?
A multi-year break = forgotten keybindings. It's the perfect moment to restart on solid ground: our HOTAS setup guide for Elite, and our X55/X56 plates with Elite Dangerous markings so you never forget a command again — with backlighting for your evening sessions. Welcome back to the black, commander o7
