Which Ship to Buy in Elite Dangerous? The Ideal 2026 Path

13/07/2026

With more than forty ships, Elite Dangerous can feel dizzying when it's time to choose. Here's the proven upgrade path, from rookie to wealthy commander, with the must-have references of 2026.

Early career

Cobra Mk III (~350,000 cr) — THE legend of Elite. Fast, versatile, capable of doing everything honourably: trading, combat, exploration. It's every commander's first real goal, and many keep it their whole career out of attachment. The Adder or Hauler can serve as intermediate steps for trading and light exploration.

Mid career

Depending on your speciality: the Diamondback Explorer (~1.9M cr) remains a budget exploration staple, while the Mandalay has become the modern explorers' reference (range, fuel-sipping supercruise). For combat, the Vulture then the Fer-de-Lance dominate their class. To do everything at once, the Python and Krait Mk II are the mid-game multi-role kings.

The top tier

The "big three" — Anaconda, Federal Corvette, Imperial Cutter — are the culmination: hundreds of millions of credits, faction ranks to unlock for some, but unmatched power and capacity. The Anaconda remains the most accessible and versatile of the three.
