The Best HOTAS for Star Citizen in 2026: Full Comparison

12/07/2026

Choosing your HOTAS for Star Citizen means investing in years of flying. Here's our 2026 comparison, budget by budget, with each model's strengths — and one technical criterion you should never overlook: prefer hall-effect sensors over potentiometers, as they last far longer.

Entry level (under $150)

Thrustmaster T16000M FCS — The reference entry point. Precise for its price, it even lets you go HOSAS on a budget (two sticks). Its potentiometers do age faster than hall sensors though. Logitech X56 — Rich in buttons and axes, popular for Star Citizen, with a huge modding community: see our complete X56 mods guide and our custom plates for X55/X56.

Mid range ($300–500)

Thrustmaster Warthog — The all-metal veteran, still relevant more than a decade after release: impeccable build, a throttle packed with switches. Our Warthog mounting guide and dedicated plates complement it perfectly. WinWing Orion 2 — The best value in the upper mid range: an F/A-18 replica with metal finish and realistic detents. Our plates for the Orion 2 adapt it to Star Citizen.

High end ($600+)

Virpil (WarBRD-D base, CM3 throttle) and VKB (Gunfighter Mk.IV) dominate the top tier: cam-based gimbals, hall sensors throughout, zero dead zone, upgradeable ecosystems (swappable bases and grips). Virpil's CM3 is arguably the best standalone throttle on the market. For Virpil panels, our VIRPIL Panel 2 plates display your Star Citizen controls.

Our final advice

Buy for what you play, not for what looks impressive: versatility → Warthog or Orion 2; tight budget → T16000M or a modded X56; maximum demands → Virpil/VKB. And whatever you choose, complete it with a control panel for ship systems. See you in the 'verse!
